Terramation

A full-circle return to the earth

Terramation, also known as Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) or human composting, is the most sustainable end-of-life option available today. Through a natural, respectful process, the body is gently transformed into nutrient-rich soil that can return to the earth and nourish new life.

At SendOff, we call it Terramation (a term coined by Return Home) because it reflects the transformation at the heart of this process: a return to terrain, a return to the cycle.

In 2024, Minnesota passed legislation to allow Terramation, with an effective date of July 1, 2025. While local facilities are still in development, we know how meaningful this option is to many Minnesotans, and we’ve been proud to support the advocacy and conversations that helped make this future possible.

Until Terramation becomes available locally, we are offering this service now through a trusted partner.

Offered Now Through Return Home

We’ve partnered with Return Home, a leading Terramation provider based in Auburn, Washington, a conveniently located suburb just south of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Return Home has developed a thoughtful, family-centered process rooted in transparency, sustainability, and deep respect for the human body and its return to the earth.

Every Terramation journey through Return Home begins with a Laying In Ceremony, where families may say goodbye in person or virtually, adorning their loved one with meaningful items like flowers, letters, or other organic tributes. The body is gently placed into a vessel filled with natural materials including straw, alfalfa, and sawdust, where the transformation into soil begins.

Families are welcome to visit the vessel throughout the process or may send items if distance prevents attending in person.

Why Terramation?

Terramation reflects our values of sustainability, autonomy, and reverence for life. It offers:

  • A sustainable alternative to flame cremation or burial
  • A non-invasive, chemical-free process
  • A chance to nourish the earth in death, just as you did in life

It’s more than a disposition; it’s a meaningful return.
